Playella | The Box by Ian Winter

Two young soldiers guard a cardboard box. A long silence.

SOLDIER ONE: (Coughs)

SOLDIER TWO: (Stretches his neck)

A long silence

SOLDIER ONE: (Stretches his neck)

Pause

SOLDIER TWO: (Coughs)

Pause.

Six seconds and they turn to look at each other and stare for six seconds then turn to look at the box for three seconds then turn to look out. They both stretch their necks.

A long silence.

SOLDIER ONE: Perhaps it’s/

SOLDIER TWO: It’s not…

A long silence.

SOLDIER TWO: It’s strange how/

SOLDIER ONE: Us! That’s here, us, only us, for days.

SOLDIER TWO: Days? What about the nights, there’s been, no night.

Pause

SOLDIER TWO: Just this day, this long, long, day.

SOLDIER ONE: Perhaps it is/

SOLDIER TWO: It’s not!

SOLDIER ONE: Then what?

SOLDIER TWO: What can you see in the distance?

They look.

SOLDIER ONE: It is.

SOLDIER TWO: Perhaps it is.

Blackout.
